Wakulla County is a special place. Many of us chose to live here because of its natural beauty, strong sense of community, and the small-town character that makes it feel like home. Over the past several years, however, our county has experienced significant growth. While growth can bring opportunity, it also brings challenges that must be addressed thoughtfully.

The reality is that as more people discover what makes Wakulla County such a wonderful place to live, development will continue. The important issue is not whether growth happens, but how we plan for it.

Responsible planning means making sure our infrastructure keeps pace with development. Roads, schools, water systems, and public services must be prepared to support both current residents and new ones. When growth happens faster than infrastructure improvements, it can create strain on our community and reduce the quality of life for residents. We are already seeing this in busy roads and overcrowded schools along with water and sewer issues.

Wakulla County already has a Comprehensive Plan that was created to guide growth and development. This plan reflects the vision and priorities of the community and should serve as an important framework when decisions about development are made. Respecting that plan helps ensure that growth happens in a way that supports long-term stability and protects the qualities that make Wakulla unique.

At the same time, we must continue looking for solutions that allow our county to grow responsibly while preserving the natural resources and character that define our community. Protecting Wakulla’s rivers, springs, coastal areas, and rural landscapes is just as important as planning for roads and infrastructure.

As our county continues to grow, thoughtful leadership and careful decision-making will be essential. By planning responsibly and focusing on the long-term future of our community, we can ensure that Wakulla County remains a place we are proud to call home for generations to come.
